Vir Chakra

For acts of gallantry in the presence of the enemy, whether on land, at sea or in the air.
The decoration may be awarded posthumously.

The Vir Chakra, India's third highest gallantry award was instituted by the President on 26th January 1950 by a Gazette of India notification. The Gazette also laid down certain regulations(effective from 15th August 1947) regarding who was eligible to recieve it.

Design of medal and ribbon

The decoration is round in shape, made of standard silver. It will have embossed on the obverse a five-pointed star with the points of the star just touching the rim. The star will have in the centre a Chakra. Within the Chakra will be a domed centre-piece bearing the Star Emblem(including motto). On reverse it will have embossed "VIR CHAKRA" both in Hindi and English writing. The ribbon is half blue and half orange in colour.

Eligible categories

(a) Officers and men and women of all ranks of the Army, of any of the Reserve Forces, of the Territorial Army, Militia, of the Republic of India and of any other lawfully constituted Armed Force.

(b) Matrons, sisters, nurses and the staff of Nursing Services and other services pertaining to hospitals and nursing, and civilians of either sex serving regularly or temporarily under the orders, directions or supervision of the above mentioned forces.
